Barred Island Preserve, Deer Isle.
This off-the-beaten-path preserve showcases Maine’s unspoiled beauty at its most magical. Take the 2.5-mile trail through moss-coated forest to a secluded beach connected by sandbar to Barred Island at low tide. Have a picnic, explore tide pools, and stretch out on sun-soaked stones while drinking up views of East Penobscot Bay.
Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport.
Looking for a short hike that delivers big views? Make the three-quarter-mile hike up the summit trail to a century-year-old Norwegian-style sod-roof hut that looks like it was plucked out of a fairytale. From this epic perch, you can see Penobscot Bay islands, the St. George peninsula, and the undulating Camden Hills.
Katahdin, Millinocket.
Want to get your heart racing before you make your proposal? Head to Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak, named “Greatest Mountain” by the Penobscot. The Knife Edge trail makes for an epic ascent. It narrows to four feet in places, with steep drop-offs in either direction. For a more easygoing climb, try the Hunt Trail. Leave early: it’s 10.4 miles there and back and yes, the views make it worth it.
Cadillac Mountain, Bar Harbor.
This special spot in Acadia National Park is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard and the first place to spot the sunrise in the United States from early October through early March. Hike or drive up to watch dawn pour pastel across the epic island landscape.
Timber Point, Biddeford.
For a more mellow outing, take the wide, flat, there-and-back 1.4-mile trail at Timber Point, the majority of which is wheelchair and stroller accessible. Beginning at a beautiful slip of beach, the path leads through forest and open fields along the Little River to open ocean. Go at low tide (and bring the right shoes!) to explore Timber Island. You’ll likely have it all to yourself.
Pemaquid Point Light, Bristol.
Make your way to the tip of Pemaquid Point to propose in a postcard setting, at what some say is Maine’s most photographed lighthouse. Roam around and through the scattering of historic buildings and make your way out to the dramatic ledges worn by centuries of crashing waves. For an extra dose of Maine coast, head to nearby Pemaquid Beach or hike the beautiful La Verna Preserve.
Popham Beach, Phippsburg.
Take a windy drive down a midcoast peninsula to remote and pristine Popham Beach State Park — and, time your trip to hit low tide. As the water retreats, a sandy path emerges to a nearby island, where, from the short summit, it’s all crashing waves, soaring seabirds, and views of distant islands and lighthouses — the Maine coast dreams are made of. Make the trip in the shoulder seasons to avoid crowds.
