Our Favorite Letter

Each month, Down East editors select our favorite response to “Where in Maine?” Here is our favorite letter from May’s photo of Rumford.

[cs_drop_cap letter=”I” color=”#000000″ size=”5em” ] was so pleased to see such a beautiful picture of Rumford! I grew up in Mexico, across the Androscoggin River, and I spent many days walking the streets of downtown Rumford. Life was simple, and much of it revolved around the mill being productive. You hear people say the paper mill smells terrible, but our families always said, “That mill makes money!” The Swift River flows into the Androscoggin here. You can follow it north to Coos Canyon, Oquossoc, and Rangeley. One of the prettiest sights you’ll ever see is from Height of Land, looking out over Mooselookmeguntic Lake and the surrounding mountains. — Gail Halliday, Oakland, Maine
