Orr's Island, Maine

Where in Maine?
January 2016

Each month, Down East editors select our favorite response to “Where in Maine?” Here is our favorite letter from January.

My father’s family has summered on Orr’s Island since before he was born. It is now a favorite destination for my children. We never quite feel we’ve arrived until we’ve driven the length of Route 24 to the end of Baileys Island. Often we’d stop on the shoulder to take in the view of Mackerel Cove. My favorite story comes from my cousin, who was working at Land’s End Gift Shop. The tide must have been coming in, and a customer asked how they got the lobstermen all to park their boats in the same direction. The customer even noticed that on some days, the direction was a little different and wondered if there was a schedule as to how the lobstermen should “park”! Would have made for a good Bert and I routine.

As soon as I saw the picture above I immediately recognized Mackerel Cove. I often use pictures I’ve taken on Bailey Island as my screen saver or Windows desktop. A co-worker once asked me about one of the pictures and I described it as one of my happy places. I’ve been going to Bailey Island for about 50 years and it is still charming and still one of my happy places.
