Your Favorite Maine Islands

your-maine-300Each month we ask readers to give us a view from “Your Maine.” Recently, we asked for your favorite Maine island. Here are some of your responses.

[columns_row width=”half”] [column]>> Scott’s Island because it was the summer home of Robert McCloskey, one of my favorite children’s-book authors. As I reread his books after my first visit to the island, I realized that the places included in the stories are real places! I wish I could pinpoint the rocks the children jumped off for swimming!

[/column] [column]>> Southport Island. Just 10 minutes from all the great activities in Boothbay Harbor, but the swing bridge over Townsend Gut and onto Southport Island makes it feel miles from everything. At the southern end of the island is Cape Newagen, possibly the most beautiful spot in the world.

Matinicus Island
Matinicus was my very first visit to an island so far off any coast. . . . It will always hold the most special place in my heart. — Gail Dan King
[separator type=”thin”][columns_row width=”third”] [column]>> Georgetown: Rising moon, ospreys’ cries, tides at Reid State Park, and waking to the gentle rumble of the lobstermen’s diesel.

[columns_row width=”half”] [column]>> My husband and I spend a week on Monhegan every summer and look forward to it every year. I love to sit on the rocks and listen to the crashing waves. There are always interesting people to talk to, either visitors or residents. As a painter, I am constantly inspired by what I see.

[/column] [column]>> Squirrel Island. It’s the most beautiful place I ever visited. The seven lights house and Hoffman cliff side property would be cool to feature.

Birch Island
From the docks of Birch Island in Casco Bay on a calm and muggy night this past July. I thought the colors perfectly encapsulated summer nights spent in Maine. — Rachael Conrad
