Where in Maine?
April 2016

Each month, Down East editors select our favorite response to “Where in Maine?” Here is our favorite letter from the April photo of Cascade Falls in Saco.

I grew up in Scarborough and have fond memories of fishing in a calm pool at the base of the waterfall and exploring the sunlit woodland trails. On one occasion, during a Cub Scout field trip, I discovered the “gorilla” cage, a massive structure with long vertical steel bars. According to Cub Scout lore, a gorilla once lived in the cage but later escaped to run wild through the woods. Each of us would pretend we were the gorilla trying to escape, while keeping a watchful eye to the woods in case he returned. In later years, I learned it actually was a bear cage. Last summer, I returned for the first time in 45 years. The memories of the thunderous waterfall, the smell of pines, and the gorilla all came rushing back to me.
