[dropcap letter=”I”]t took centuries of storm waves to hew Monument Cove’s namesake pillar from the rugged granite cliffs. Still, the improbable-looking monument is “quite ephemeral,” according to geologist Duane Braun. The co-author of the Guide to the Geology of Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park estimates it has stood in its current form for 500 years and might last, at most, a few hundred more. Good thing for posterity that snap-happy travelers have taken so many pics from the nearby bluffs.
