Organized by the Maine Outdoor Coalition, the Great Maine Outdoor weekend — a biannual event with dozens of happenings across the state — actually spans more than one weekend this month. It kicks off on Feb. 7 in Brunswick with a potluck and presentation on wilderness search and rescue and wraps up on Feb. 23 in Norway with a cross-country ski race. In between: an ice-fishing derby, a snowshoe hike, a wildlife demonstration, and more.

The Oxbow brewers might be best known for their pale, tart farmhouse ales, but they have a sneaky good lineup of dark beers too — from porters to stouts to smoked beers — on full display all at once for Dark Side of the Woods, a new event at the Newcastle brewery. Novelist (and occasional Down East contributor) Monica Wood’s first play, 2015’s Papermaker, about a bitter strike at a Maine paper mill, was the best-selling show in Portland Stage Company’s 45-year history. No wonder they want her back. With The Half-Light, Wood explores new territory but similar themes of loss and redemption. It’s the story of a college secretary, who believes she might have a gift for seeing the dead, and her colleague, who is dealing with grief.
