Where in Maine?
October 2016

Each month, Down East editors select our favorite response to “Where in Maine?” Here is our favorite letter from the October photo of the Oquossoc Angling Association on the Mooselookmeguntic lake.

In the summer of 1942, Mrs. Anita King taught me, at age 16, proper dishwashing in the dining hall on the west bank of the Kennebago River. Hall Grant and Dave Quimby guided the affluent members of the Oquossoc Angling Association on the Kennebago, Rangeley Stream, and the channel out into Mooselookmeguntic Lake. Herb Welch protected with a 12-gauge shotgun the vegetable garden where deer competed with the chef for fresh produce. We couldn’t see the Kennebago Valley from the resort, but you could wade to the bar in the photo’s foreground — carefully.
