Each month, Down East editors select our favorite response to “Where in Maine?” Here is our favorite letter from the May photo of Great Falls at Veterans Memorial Park, Lewiston.
I moved from Manhattan to Lewiston/Auburn 23 years ago, and my original office building had a spectacular view of Great Falls and Veterans Memorial Park. From my office window, I often watched bald eagles dive into the Androscoggin River as the falls raged with the spring thaw. As the river has grown cleaner and become a more vital part of the community, kayakers and canoeists now paddle past this spot, pedestrians on the riverwalk sneak a peek at the view, and hot-air balloonists at the annual balloon festival get a delightful bird’s-eye view. Too many people have misconceptions about the beauty and quality of life in the community I now call home. I hope this photo encourages them to rethink and inspires them to pay a visit.
