Arena football’s Maine Mammoths played their inaugural game, and minor-league hockey’s new Maine Mariners announced they’d join the New York Rangers farm system. Fans of local sports — and alliteration — cheered.

Winslow

For the first time in 20 years, a reindeer was born in Maine, at a local petting zoo. Her name is Mistletoe. The state hasn’t had a wild reindeer population for more than a century.

Auburn

Lufthansa announced that, after 10 years of restoration at Auburn-Lewiston Airport, a 1950s Lockheed Starliner, once a stalwart of trans-Atlantic flight, will make one more overseas trip, to Germany, where rehab work will continue.

Oakland

After burning rubber in front of a cop, a teen driver exclaimed, “You can’t do anything about it!” The misinformed youth had read a satirical news story about a court ruling that rubber marks are protected speech — and apparently missed the joke.

Acadia National Park

UMaine forestry doctoral student and Maliseet tribe member Suzanne Greenlaw is working with park officials to study whether native tribes could sustainably harvest sweetgrass on public lands for traditional basket weaving.
