Warming Up for the Holidays

Warming Up for the Holidays
Dec. 6, 2011

We've been busy decking the halls at Roxmont, the former mansion that houses the Down East offices in Rockport. We've decorated the tree, wrapped the banister in garland, and dangled balsam kissing balls from the ceiling. Our festive mood has spilled into this newsletter, which is loaded with ideas for memorable, unexpected gifts, books to read by the fire, and food to nourish and comfort.

Enjoy! And don’t forget to join us on Facebook!

'Lost Trail' Authors, Illustrator on 207

Donn Fendler first told his story of getting lost on Mount Katahdin in 1939 in Lost on a Mountain in  Maine, which is familiar to anyone who attended a public elementary school in Maine (it is required reading for fourth graders).  He has now retold the harrowing tale in the graphic novel Lost Trail, co-written with Lynn Plourde and illustrator Ben Bishop. Watch an interview with the trio on WCSH TV's 207.

Artworks from the Sea

For the past ten years, photographer Joyce Tenneson has been filling her house with shells. Read about her passion for these natural art objects in the December issue of Down East and pick up a signed copy of her book, Shells: Nature's Exquisite Creations, at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland on Dec. 16 from 3-5 p.m.

Schnitzel and Sauerkraut

Tucked into the rolling rural hills of Waldoboro, Morse's Kraut Haus Restaurant and European Deli draws fans from far beyond Maine who hunger not only for hard-to-find European specialty foods and authentic German fare, but also for the fresh sauerkraut that first earned German-immigrant farmer Virgil Morse fame back in 1918. Read "Schnitzel and Sauerkraut" in the December issue of Down East.
