Released in 2006, the movie Islander drew raves for scenes like this one. The film showcased the beauty of a tight-knit offshore community, but it also explored the tensions that can break out, and it was shot on this very midcoast island, which has seen its share of drama. That people have strong feelings about this place shouldn’t surprise — the sorts of lobster wars depicted in Islander have become legendary hereabouts. But the romance of the isle has attracted love-besotted artists, and wise authors, too. Fifteen miles out to sea, these twenty-five square miles are undeniably picturesque and the way of life here is certainly unique in Maine. Consider the local (now abandoned) quarries, which sent building blocks to the Washington Monument, the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, and so many other sites in the northeast.
