2013 Maine Antiques Symposium "A 21st Century View"
The 2013 Maine Antiques Symposium jointly sponsored by the Maine Antiques Dealers Association and The Kennebunkport Historical Society will take place at the Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport Me. on Saturday September 28th, 2013 from 8:30am to 5:00pm.
This daylong event will begin with an early bird breakfast in the Colony Hotel Carriage House followed by a diverse series of talks by distinguished speakers. After each talk there will be time for a question and answer period. The first speaker will be Earle Shettleworth, Jr, The Maine State Historian, who will use photo postcards to examine childhood living in the early1900s.
Susan Edwards a museum and historic education consultant will give an illustrated lecture titled “A Backward Glance: Celebrating the Arts and Craftsmanship of Southern Maine.” Kate Manko of Manko Antiques and American Folk Art will speak about growing up in the antiques business and learning how to collect at a young age, as well as being a young antiques dealer now. She will talk about how she learned to start a collection and discuss the next generation and future of the antique business. There will be a break for lunch in the Hotel’s dining room overlooking the ocean and then James Hastrich and Linda La Roche will give a slide presentation on “Miniatures- Painted Furniture” and “Miniatures - Brown Furniture.” The miniatures of furniture are constructed on a 1” to 2” scale using traditional methods such as using square nails and mortise and tendon joints and covering the time span from 1680 to 1860. Following this presentation Edwin Churchill, a former chief curator of The Maine State Museum and author of “Simple Forms and Vivid Colors: An Exhibition of Maine decorated Furniture” will speak on “Discovering Maine Furniture”.
The next phase of the Symposium will feature a panel of prominent auctioneers discussing and interpreting where the antiques business has been and where it is headed. The panel participants are Ronald Bourgeault, Richard Keating, Hap Moore, and Kaja Veilleux and the moderator facilitating their discussion will be Joy Piscopo of FO Bailey Antiquarians.
The day will end with a cocktail reception where the audience will have the opportunity to continue the conversation with the presenters. This promises to be an informative and entertaining day to anyone interested in antiques and history.
