Q: What is your favorite way to enjoy winter in Maine?
A day outside with the grandkids. We snowshoe, cross-country ski, slide, build snow forts and people, and are able to do all this on our two-acre lot and surrounding fields. Then from our house we spend time just standing in awe of our view of Mount Katahdin and the surrounding hills covered in snow.

Cross-country skiing on a blue-sky day at the Bangor City Forest. It’s a fantastic place to spend a few hours either skiing or walking though the woods!
Stockton Springs, Maine
My husband, who is from Maine, says the best way to enjoy winter in Maine is from a distance! I’d like to try it, though. I’m from Louisiana and couldn’t get away fast enough.
Walking with my husband on the Seven Island Road along Squapan Lake in Aroostook County after a snowstorm.
Fayetteville, North Carolina
An invigorating (aka cold!) walk along Wells Beach in February, followed by a jump into the hot tub at Layfayette’s Oceanfront Resort to warm up!

My husband and I enjoy cold, crystal clear mornings with the snow crunching under our snowshoes at Reid State Park. Most of the roads are left unplowed and it is an amazing snowshoe trek with vistas to adjacent icy marshes, ponds, and a swirling ocean, which is about the only unfrozen element on the horizon.
I like to cuddle up in my chair by my window overlooking the Androscoggin River and watch the snowfall while enjoying a hot tea and a good book.

Location: International Space Station (SS), lower earth orbit
The Moment: Astronaut Sunita Williams was photographed by a colleague getting cozy with Down East 255 miles above the earth. The magazine was a surprise for the Maine-loving spacewoman, arranged by her sister Dina Pandya with the help of Down East editors. Pandya sent several issues to NASA, with the intent that they be delivered to the ISS on a supply shuttle in advance of Williams’ arrival in July. Because of cargo weight limits, however, NASA scanned the issues to Williams’ Web page instead. She is seen here reading a printout. Williams and Pandya have vacationed in Maine many times since their childhood in Massachusetts. “This might actually be the impetus for her to retire to Maine,” Pandya says. Sunita, who was made commander of the space station during her 127 days in orbit, returned to earth on a Russian Soyuz capsule just before Thanksgiving.
