Where in Maine?
Have you ever been to this happening harbor?

The clues are many in this autumnal photo. The harbor here sits on a well-traveled island famed for its birches, its sandy beach, and its brown signs. But which inlet is it? Start with the smile of sand — you’ve almost surely driven past it if you’ve ventured east of Ellsworth. Millions of people do, anyway. Tourists have been coming this way for the better part of a century, and rusticators and artists preceded them here. This particular community was known for its academics, often from Harvard or Yale, and they were followed by celebrities. Several of the best-known of this island’s many summer residents — including a maven of more recent vintage — spent their time here. The cottages of the rich ringed the water or looked at it from on high with fanciful names like Edgecliff, Overlook, Glengariff, Craigstone, Eastholm, and Miradero, each more impressive than the next. President William Howard Taft came to visit one such cottage in 1910, and when his three hundred pounds hit the floating dock, his feet were quickly submerged. (The situation wasn’t helped when several of his aides rushed to the corner of the float to help him.) And President Obama made a different sort of splash as well when he stopped by the island this summer. Have you ever been to this happening harbor? Send us a note at P.O.
