Glowing in the late-winter sun, this midcoast community looks too pretty to be haunted. But its most famous resident is indeed a ghost. Casper “the Friendly Ghost” supposedly lived at Whipstaff Manor here, and when it came time to shoot the 1995 movie about the sprightly spirit, Hollywood came calling. The producers didn’t find this genuine fishing village quaint enough and elected to set up their set in a tourist town up the road. Too bad for them. This place is the real deal, a salty hamlet backed up a hill along a bay the natives called “Meduncook” with one of the more picturesque harbors around. Fishing is still king around here — the lobstermen in these parts take their livelihoods so seriously they’ve been willing to go to war over it. A high-profile kerfuffle between the fleet here and the one on a neighboring island made the nightly news in the late 1990s, putting the port on the map once again.
