Where in Maine?

When this grand dame of Maine theaters opened in June of 1932, it was considered the finest movie house in New England. With chandeliers and velvet seats, private boxes and a graceful proscenium arch, the theater was a showplace befitting the tony coastal community it entertained. Built at a reported cost of $150,000 (some estimates put it at twice that), it was the sort of nightspot where limousines would queue up out front at show time. Evalyn Walsh McLean would drop by wearing the Hope Diamond. The young Rockefellers would line up to buy candy. Admiral Byrd would stop in for a lecture. Those days of high glamor faded years ago, but the theater still remains a focal point of its hometown, showing the latest blockbusters and hosting live performances. As the New York Times put it in 1996, the old theater, “makes moviegoing once again seem like a big night out.” Post a comment by clicking below if you think you can identify this ritzy auditorium.
