Where in Maine?
Just wanted to respond to your “Where in Maine?” feature in your September issue that shows our little covered bridge here in Saco, on Water Street, midway between Main and Elm. It’s an ideal place to walk one’s dog or just catch a quiet moment and an eye-level view of the passing Saco River, with the mills of Saco Island and downtown Biddeford as a backdrop.

Park View
Here at Baxter State Park, we read with interest your September articles about the park. Your “Katahdin Lake at Last” feature opens with a photograph of Katahdin, but the caption mistakenly states that 6,691 acres recently became a part of the park with the Katahdin Lake Project. In actuality, as Jeff Clark’s article correctly notes, the Baxter State Park Authority accepted 4,119 acres (including Katahdin Lake) into the park. The remaining acres in the project fell under the administration of the Maine Department of Conservation.

Also, in the “How To Climb Mount Katahdin” interview, we would like to clarify a few points. First, the three thousand-foot vertical climb is true only from Roaring Brook trailheads, as it is about four thousand feet from the Abol and Katahdin Stream trailheads. Also, the actual hiking distance from where you park your car to South Turner Mountain is two miles. Finally, a typical Katahdin day takes eight to ten hours. Park gates open at 5 a.m. during the summer and the trailhead can be full by 6 or 7 a.m.
