Retirement Guide to Maine
Maine is home to a variety of retirement communities (organized here by regions as defined by the Maine Office of Tourism) that offer everything from active lifestyle settings to assisted-living apartments to skilled nursing facilities, as well as amenities, such as swimming pools, beauty salons, and walking trails.
The Southern Coast
Maine’s southern coast is distinguished by thirty miles of sandy beaches, rare elsewhere in a state known for its rugged, rocky coast. This is Maine’s most populated and most visited region, so shopping opportunities and cultural offerings are abundant. There are also endless ways to stay physically active, from swimming and sailing to biking and golf.

Down East and Acadia
Best known for Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island (MDI), Down East Maine is a stunning landscape of rocky shoreline, blueberry barrens, and bays with dramatic tides. More than two million people visit MDI each summer and fall, so the island has no shortage of restaurants and lodging. Tourism falls off dramatically, however, as one ventures east — indeed, Down East, with its slow pace and vast undeveloped lands, is often said to be a living time capsule of the Maine coast decades ago.
