The theme for this winter’s evening lectures is Water and Planting in the Home Landscape for Beauty and Conservation. The March speaker will be Candi (Benwitz) Gilpatric, a Maine Natural Resource Conservation Agricultural Engineer who will discuss Pond Construction and Maintenance.

Join Kate Petrie, Acadia National Park Ranger, on Friday, March 15, from 11:30 am til 1 pm, for a presentation on the natural landforms of Schoodic. She will present information and images that show the effects of glaciers and wave action on the rocks of Schoodic. The meeting will be at Eliot Hall on the SERC campus. Free and open to the public; donations welcome at the door. Bring your lunch; SERC will supply coffee, tea, and water.

The society is seeking new members, but the program is open to all. Have a new telescope? Bring it and learn how to use it; or come and learn about the Jesup’s new telescope and how to check it out and take it home, just like a book.This is a free service and part of the Jesup’s ongoing community outreach.

Timing: Wave starts will begin appr. 10 minutes after the shuttle bus arrives at the starting points – appr. 9:45 a.m. for the 20K and 10:00 a.m. for the 40K. The 60K will begin at Grand Falls Hut at 8 a.m. Official timing will end at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday for all participants.
Distances: 20K/40K/60k
Divisions: Race(R) and Tour (T)
Participants: 175 combined between all distances – limit 32 spaces for the 60K, and up to 120 spaces available for the 20K/40K.
Schoodic Christmas Bird Count

Join the thousands of people across the country who participate in the largest and longest-running citizen science project, counting birds for the Audubon Christmas Bird Count. As part of the national effort that has taken place for over 100 years, SERC Institute will assist in the Schoodic Bird Count, held this year on New Year’s Day. The Schoodic Christmas Bird Count will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013. Count compiler Bill Townsend and Schoodic Bird Ecology Lab Director Seth Benz invite you to get in on the action.
