Bonsai is an art form that stems from ancient, oriental culture, originating in China and developed by the Japanese. In the thirteenthcentury, the Japanese collected and potted wild trees that had been dwarfed by nature. These naturally formed miniatures were some of the first bonsai. In this hands-on workshop each participant will receive a tree and learn how to prune and pot it — all materials will be supplied, but if you have small pruning shears, please bring them.

Dede Corvinus, a professional actor and director, and Barbara Wilson teach a 3-3½ hour acting workshop that is open to adults and high schoolers. The workshop will focus on "action" and "objective." We’ll guide students through a variety of acting exercises exploring theatrical response; in particular, the concept that words are there for actors to play action, rather than express emotion.

Award-winning poet Kathleen Ellis and participants in her annual poetry writing workshop invite the public to a reading that is the culmination of the group's week-long poetry workshop. Poet Kathleen Ellis is the author of five poetry collections and will read from her most recent collection, Narrow River to the North. She teaches literature and creative writing at the University of Maine, Orono, and her work has been widely published in literary magazines and anthologies.

Drawing from the Land with Andrea Sulzer

What is our relationship to place? How do our contemporary views affect how we see the land? What is a landscape? In this intensive class, students will use various drawing media plus collage to think about these questions. Topics include: pattern and texture; repetition and rhythm; fragmentation; scale and point of view. Artist Andrea Sulzer received an MFA from the Glasgow School of Art and teaches drawing at the University of Maine at Augusta and has worked as a mentor in Maine College of Art’s MFA program.
