Summer in Maine is all about house guests. In the springtime Mainers begin receiving unexpected calls and emails from old college classmates and second cousins twice removed who are planning a trip to the Pine Tree State, and by the way, would we happen to have a spare room where they could spend the night? Being obliging sorts by nature, we dust off the porch, launder the linens, and shake the road sand out of the welcome mat. When you are entertaining company, you want your place to look good.

The same might be said for a magazine. If you are new to Down East, we hope you enjoy your visit. Regular readers might notice that we’ve done some overdue housekeeping with this issue. As part of our redecorating we’ve moved the furniture around. For instance, we’ve placed the “What’s in a Picture” feature in our “North by East” section to make room for a new “From Our Archive” page that takes you back to 1954 when you could still buy a waterfront house for ten grand. We’ve added lots of little touches to make your experience more pleasurable, but you will still find everything you love about the Magazine of Maine here or (as with the calendar listings) online at DownEast.com.

The table of contents on pages 2 and 4 can direct you around our renovated rooms, or you can enjoy the surprises as you read. Either way, we bid you welcome and hope you’ll stay as long as you like. Our house is — and always has been — your house.
