The boats are back in town. Vessels of all shapes and sizes have returned to the marina on this coastal river, readying for adventure on the summer swells. This tidal waterway serves as the border between two closely knit communities, and many visitors have a difficult time discerning where one begins and the other ends. The river here has been an attraction for centuries — fishermen plied the waters downstream for decades before the first municipality incorporated here in 1653. The settlement disappeared from the Massachusetts map in 1689 during King William’s War, but it was soon rebuilt. These days residents don’t worry so much about rampaging Indians as about being washed away. Both by spring floods — this river overran its banks, undercutting several roads, a few months ago — and by tides of tourists. Have you ever cruised upriver from this marina? Send us a note at P.O.
