When David Quinn, the founder of Acorn (2 Cedar St., 800-872-2676, www.acorn.com [2]), a footwear company based in Lewiston, landed a deal with NASA in 1982, the company gave new meaning to its slogan “Comfort on Earth.” That year, astronauts were sent on their shuttle missions wearing Acorn’s signature Slipper Socks. Since then, astronauts have logged more than five hundred million miles in their comfy Acorns, and one pair has been placed on permanent exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Quinn founded the company in 1976, modeling his socks after those he had worn growing up on family ski vacations. Aside from its iconic Slipper Sock design ($39.95) — consisting of a ragg wool sock fitted with a soft leather sole — Acorn now offers a full footwear line, including socks, shoes, and sandals in a variety of styles, colors, and materials.
