Down East 2013 ©
When this statue was erected six years ago for a TV shoot, some locals were amused that the salmon in the fisherman's arms was the wrong kind. See, this community way Down East is famous for its aquaculture industry, built around the Atlantic salmon, and this fellow seems to be cradling a salmon of the Pacific variety. Even with the error, a lot of people have come to love the giant red-bearded fellow on the waterfront of this historic port. But after a few years of salt - and some nasty vandals - the statue began to deteriorate quickly. So a Save Our Fisherman committee was established, the necessary monies were raised, and the statue - dedicated to a firefighter with a local connection who died at Ground Zero - has been restored. The tourists who come here to watch for whales or gawk at the bay's famous whirlpool (the largest in the Western Hemisphere) certainly seem to enjoy him. You could almost say this salmon-toting seaman has become another local character in a city famous for them.
