Where in Maine?
February 2016

Each month, Down East editors select our favorite response to “Where in Maine?” Here is our favorite letter from February.

I came to Maine as a single United States Navy Petty Officer, to be stationed at the Naval Security Group Activity Winter Harbor Navy base in October 1958. To my surprise, after getting lost many times once I left Route 1, I chanced upon Grindstone Neck – a community in Winter Harbor. As I drove around admiring the summer “cottages,” I came upon this building. It was right out of a child’s storybook. As soon as I reported aboard the base and had some free time, I went back to the building and photographed it in December, then again in summer. I always stop to see my old friend each time I am in the neighborhood. It welcomed me to Maine nearly 58 years ago.
