Since 1916, the Boy with the Leaking Boot sculpture has been the most identifiable landmark in this Aroostook County town (“It’s worth a trip to watch it drip!” as the slogan goes). But this 187-foot bridge, built in 2006, is already on its way to icon status. At the very least it’s a symbol of the developments happening along the nearly unpronounceable river near the community’s historic Market Square. In the past five years, this venerable village has actively spruced up its riverfront, putting in picnic tables, parklands, and a walking path. Plus the bridge, of course. The artful span is decorated with plaques chronicling the history of the well-known burg. The artist had a lot to draw on, from the town’s founding in 1807, to its selection as the army’s first transatlantic Radio Intelligence Station during World War I, to its service as a POW camp in WWII, to the birth of peace proponent Samantha Smith, and Ultimate Fighter 2 contestant Marcus “the Irish Hand Grenade” Davis.
