In the summer of 1951, the cries of Shakespeare’s tragic character Caliban could be heard bellowing from the Bok Amphitheater overlooking Camden Harbor. Located behind the Camden Public Library, the amphitheater, named for its benefactor Mary Louise Curtis Bok Zimbalist, played host to four Shakespearian matinees over the summer, including The Tempest, shown above. With the character Miranda in the background, photographer Luis Marden snapped a photo for National Geographic of a joyous Prospero beckoning to his sprite Ariel. The play was performed by the Camden Hills Theatre Group — a talented troupe of young performers, directors, and stagehands selected from around the country that included Tony Montanaro, one of the world’s foremost mimes, as well as John Astin, the lead actor in the 1970s television show, The Addams Family. —Will Bleakley
