EAT, PRAY, EAT

Like so many people this summer, we at Down East were inspired by the release of Eat Pray Love, the movie based on the book by Elizabeth Gilbert (who spoke with us a while back). It was mostly the Italian scenes that caught our fancy (and appetite), as you'll see when you peruse the articles below. Traipse through Rome (Maine) with Gelato Fiasco, experience a luscious authentic pizza margherita right here in Camden, and try a slow-simmer tomato sauce from our local expert Kathy Gunst.
Enjoy! And don't forget to join us on Facebook!

Family Pies
Paolina Rella (1903-1981) contributed a lot more than just her name to the midcoast's best new pizzeria. Her spirit infuses everything at Paolina's Way in Camden, from the fresh tomato sauce to the hand-picked flowers on the tables. But her influence is most deeply felt in the passion of owner Christina Sidoti, Paolina's granddaughter.

Eat Pray Love the Food You Eat In Maine This Summer

Watching Julia Roberts traipse through Italy made me very very hungry. I won't go into a full-scale review of the movie (suffice it to say that Julia Roberts is WAY too big and recognizable a star/celebrity for me to believe for even a second that she was really "suffering" from all that angst), but the food sure was gorgeous.

Fiasco di Gelato
Four years ago Joshua Davis and Bruno Tropeano, the founders of Maine's premier Italian gelateria, the Gelato Fiasco, were living in Rome. Business partners since their sophomore year at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts, in 2002, the pair had first successfully ventured into real estate speculation, then property management. But while in Rome their interests turned to artisanal foods — and eventually honed in on gelato. This story wouldn't be very surprising except that this Rome (population 980) is located about a half an hour from Maine's capital, Augusta. And there wasn't a gelateria in sight.
