For those without fruit trees in the yard or a share in a community-supported agriculture farm, autumn is the perfect time to take a country drive and bag yourself a bushel of apples. Beginning in September and running well into October, pick-your-own apple orchards welcome people to wander their rows of trees and twist free McIntoshes, Cortlands, Golden Delicious, and dozens of other varieties.
