Chellie KOs Colbert
Anyone who has watched the Colbert Report, the late-night pseudo news program, knows that host Stephen Colbert is master of the deadpan and his film editors are masters of the soundbite (context be damned). So we were a bit apprehensive when he took on Maine’s First District Representative Chellie Pingree, D-North Haven, last night. Starting out the segment in a Sou’wester and asking Pingree such enlightened questions as “Are you in the part of Maine that is not actually in Canada?,” Colbert moved onto more weighty topics such as “How gay is Maine?” While the cameras can usually splice and dice guests’ comments into something hilarious and nonsensical (that’s where the lack of context helps), Pingree put on an impressive performance and remained composed. She even managed to shoot a jab of her own back at Colbert, asking him if he would ever want to marry a lobster and keeping a straight face as he demonstrated the effect of windpower on her hand. All in all, an Oscar-worthy performance by Maine’s freshman congresswoman.
