Merchants Row’s Gulf of Maine Wooden Memory Tiles ($30; merchantsrow.bigcartel.com) may be a simple memory matching game played by children, but it takes the artistic eye of an adult to be fully appreciated. Complete with sixteen pieces depicting marine life and vessels found in the Gulf of Maine, each tile is handcrafted from birch plywood by Mark Marchesi. Marchesi, a photographer who grew up in Rye, New York, and now lives in South Portland started the business when he created a colorful wooden puzzle of Maine’s sixteen counties. He now sells his memory cards, wooden puzzles, and body surfing hand planes in stores across Camden, Augusta, and Portland, including Angela Adams, Maine Maven, and the Portland Museum of Art Store.
