It’s places like this old library that make this stretch of Down East coastline so picturesque. The road out front has been designated a National Scenic Byways with miles of unspoiled coastline, dramatic sea vistas, and pretty fishing villages. In 1907, Fred L. Savage, one of the most famous architects to ever draw up plans in the state, designed this Tudor revival-style structure between Jones Cove and Jones Pond. With its half-timbered gable and curved hood, its flared cobblestone foundation, and its inviting entryway, the building welcomes you inside to check out a book. You’ll find a wide-ranging collection about the Pine Tree State, with books from authors as diverse as Louise Dickinson Rich (who wrote The Peninsula) and poet Amy Clampitt. Both lived right down the road. (Today, the resident celebrity in town is Kara DioGuardi, formerly of American Idol.) The local historical society meets here, and if you attend one of their get-togethers, you’ll learn that this area was originally the County of Lincoln.
