Where in Maine?

Can you identify this quiet village and its gazebo?

Dusk is falling on the snow-covered common of this riverside hamlet, but a lighted Christmas tree and garlands are warmth against the chill. The park is the scene of occasions both solemn and festive throughout the year, and the annual tree lighting, when residents gather to sing carols and exchange good cheer, is a particularly joyous one. Best known for its breathtaking views of coastal mountains, this town, named for a quarryman, was once one of the state’s largest suppliers of granite paving blocks, and one quarry remains active to this day. A 1,080-foot mountain with panoramic views is a favorite of hikers but otherwise the community is not a major destination, even though thousands of tourists zip along its eastern border each summer on a National Scenic Byway as they explore one of Maine’s premier attractions.

If you can identify this quiet village, send us a note at P.O. Box 679, Camden, ME 04843; whip off an email to editorial@downeast.com; or post a comment below. We’ll feature our favorite letter in an upcoming issue — and send the winner a Down East wall calendar.
