Island Hopping

Navigating the Maine Island Trail Association’s (207- 761-8225) 185 island and coastline sites spanning over 375 miles just got a whole lot easier. This membership organization provides stewardship of these public and private coastal sites and is dedicated to helping boaters enjoy them responsibly. Just this year MITA made its twenty-two-year-old paper guide available online. That means interactive nautical charts, local weather, tide information, and other essential tidbits that will make your boating excursion — whether by kayak, sailboat, or cabin-cruiser — smooth sailing. The online guide is included in the membership fee: $45 for an individual, $65 for a family. If you’re considering joining, check out the association’s Web site (www.mita.org) to peruse the trial version for free. You might not be up for paddling the whole trail, but with this mobile guide, any outing, however ambitious, is easier — and safer — than ever.
