The Sporting Club looks delightfully tropical in this image, which is ironic because it couldn’t be much farther north — it’s practically in Canada. It’s not really a club, either, and you don’t have to be a sport to stop by. Anyone with an appetite is welcome at this upcountry institution hard by a lake with a long name. Meals have been served here for almost a century, and over that time the Sporting Club has become well known for the ployes — buckwheat pancakes — that come with every meal. (Fried chicken is another staple, as are the plank-like fries that most certainly came from the local fields.) In winter snowmobiles line up out front, but this time of year the sleds are replaced by boats. The local town is diminutive by Maine standards — 160-some residents live on its fifty-four square miles — but somehow, in a region of the state where many restaurants can’t keep their doors open, this one has been serving hot meals since 1922.
