Where in Maine?

Have you ever been to this pretty harbor, which shares a name with places in Nova Scotia and Antigua?

The local lobster shack proudly proclaims this the prettiest harbor on the Maine coast. Could be. At the wet end of a midcoast peninsula, this village looks out over one of the state’s deepest rivers, a tidal inlet so vast that A Cruising Guide to the Maine Coast dubs it the best cruising river Down East. The place is old — according to legend, past visitors include the Vikings and the Phoenicians — and was the tenth municipality in the state to incorporate, back in 1716. Since then it’s become known as an artist’s haven, home to such Maine notables as the Zorachs, Marsden Hartley, and Dahlov Ipcar. It’s also famous for a 1934 forest fire that all but leveled the place. Don’t confuse the spot with similarly named communities in Nova Scotia and Antigua, or even a section of the Mattawamkeag River, and don’t look too hard for the yacht club — it’s one of those cool clubs along the Maine coast without an actual clubhouse.
