With a view like this you don't need much else. The first settler to build a cabin on this famous Maine harbor lived very simply, but he and his family were certainly rich in views. A former resident of Gloucester, Massachusetts, this early explorer was a maker of barrel staves who sailed the coast in 1761 looking for a place to build his little log home — and landed here. Fine choice. The view takes in one of Maine's true natural wonders, a colossal example of glacial sculpting unique on the eastern seaboard.In time a hamlet grew up around that first little cabin. All white clapboard Colonials, the whole of it now comprises a National Register of Historical Places. Famed Maine scribe Louise Dickinson Rich had this to say of the tiny town: "I think, without exception, the very prettiest village I ever saw, bar none." (Sorry, Wiscasset.) Summer visitors certainly take to this harborside spot, arriving en masse to climb the peaks and camp at a nifty campground down the road.
