No Maine town celebrates the holidays quite like Freeport, where Discovery Park at the L.L.Bean Flagship Store transforms each year into the epicenter of cheer. Visit this year’s Northern Lights Celebration to share in your family’s favorite holiday traditions — and maybe start a few new ones.

Through December 31

1.

Discovery Forest and Night Sky Dome Wander a path through a softly glowing wood of 400 Maine-sourced trees, all litup with twinkling white lights. At the heart of this enchanted forest, warm up in a planetarium-like geodesic dome and watch the “sky” come alive with the dancing colors of the aurora borealis.

Dome is open daily. 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Free.

2.

Reindeer Barn Visit with real
Maine reindeer and old St. Nick himself in a cheery holiday shed scented of holly and barnwood (a way better photo backdrop than a fake plastic North Pole).

Visits with Santa every Saturday and Sunday,
December 3–23. 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Free.

3.

Model Train Village All aboard! Follow the circuit of an elaborate electric train set in the kids’ department of the Flagship Store,
courtesy of the imagineers at the Boothbay Railway Village.

Daily. 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Free.

4.

Horse-Drawn Wagon Rides Tour downtown Freeport in classic holiday style.

Saturdays and Sundays in December.
3–7 p.m. Free.

5.

Walk-In Snow Globe For all the times you’ve shaken a snow globe and willed yourself into the idyllic wintry scene.
A perfect family photo-op.

Daily. 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Free.

6.

Woodcarving Display Check out the (surprisingly lifelike!) woodland creatures carved from stumps — and if you’re lucky,
watch the wood chips fly during a live demonstration.

See a full schedule of Northern Lights Celebration events — including kids’ crafting activities, live music, and food tastings.
