If you get out the yardstick, this hip riverside burg is by far Maine’s tiniest city, taking up just six square miles. You can literally walk end to end in the span of an hour, and it’s definitely a tour worth taking. From its antique downtown to its beautiful old houses perched in hillside neighborhoods, this small wonder has big — and offbeat — attractions. How many other Maine communities have a public restroom club? Or a spiffy riverside bike path? Or a museum in the streets that tells gripping tales of feast and flood? The city once boasted a thriving shipping port, big logging operations, and an important granite-quarrying industry. (A Pulitzer-Prize winning book based on the diaries of a 1785-1812 resident documents ye olde days here.) Things might be on a smaller scale now, but all’s well just the same.
