'Between the Tides'
Otter Island Film Shorts Show Midcoast Life

This summer, The Strand Theatre will premiere "Between the Tides," a 12-part series of documentary short films by Emmy award winning director D’Arcy Marsh, highlighting unique slices of life in Midcoast Maine. The first five films in the series will premiere on Sunday, July 6 at the Strand, running continuously during the theatre’s three-year anniversary celebration and open house. The films will be shown every Sunday at 5:30 p.m., before the theatre’s regular film screenings throughout July and August.

The series furthers The Strand Theatre’s commitment to bringing quality entertainment and alternative programming to the community, and offers those not familiar with the Midcoast area the opportunity to learn a bit about life here. Donna Daly, Strand Theatre director, is extremely excited to be able to offer these short-subject films at the Strand this summer.
“The Between the Tides" series is a great opportunity for the theatre to showcase some of the things that make Maine the unique place that it is. By showing these films, we want to open peoples eyes to some of the small things that make life here in the Midcoast area so special; the natural beauty of this area, especially in and around the Ocean, the many talented and interesting people who call this place home, and the short stories that weave life here together.”
The series will explore Midcoast Maine’s diverse environmental and cultural subject matters including Jamie Wyeth’s studio and the total immersion of his creative process in action, five generations of fathers and sons building boats on North Haven since 1888, musician and sculptor Gordon Bok, the 3rd and 4th grade government class on North Haven, close-ups of the Midcoast’s vibrant plants and pollinators, and the story of two adult ospreys and the drama of caring for and raising their young. Using time-lapse photography the world speeds up and unveils hidden patterns in the movement of the tides, the rotation of the sun and moon, and the endless formations of clouds.
“Making this series of short-subject films for The Strand Theatre has been a great experience because The Strand is one of the few truly great community theatres in America,” said filmmaker D’Arcy Marsh. “To be a part of that tradition is a prestigious honor. It is a great opportunity because when people hear that we are making short films for The Strand they open their doors and their hearts to our small film crew. They take us in as family and participate in the making of the films with love and honesty.”

All screenings of the "Between the Tides' program will he held at The Strand Theatre at 345 Main Street.
The full schedule will be available online at www.rocklandstrand.com . The shorts will also be available as a two-DVD set at the theatre and yet to be determined outlets in Rockland.
