Anticipation

Excerpted from "Acadia Panorama:"

There are few places I have yet encountered where I enjoy the process of making images as much as on Mount Desert Island, and Acadia National Park. I am constantly and consistently inspired by the confluence of ocean, shoreline, forest and mountain we find here. I try to flow wherever the weather and the resultant light may take me, and most of these explorations result in scouting trips, not images. I look foremost for an interesting quality of light that reveals a particular essence of a place or subject. When I anticipate a situation unfolding, I try to recall a location which will best utilize this light. Different light unveils different qualities, so I would have to say that there is no "bad" light...perhaps only inappropriate. While it may sound like it's all about planning and calculation, this really is an emotional rather than a cerebral process for me. As often as not, I'll stumble across a situation that stops me in my tracks - "Oh my, that's just wonderful!" - and compels me to start making images. Along the Maine coast, and especially on Mount Desert Island, this happens every day. I hope you enjoy the results.
