Listen to Portland’s Prestigious Orchestra, Freeport

Nothing beats a Saturday night listening to great music in the great outdoors, a Maine sky above your head, and the open doors of L.L. Bean nearby for a little post-concert shopping. Every summer the Maine outdoor giant hosts a series of concerts at Discovery Park, part of their flagship compound in Freeport. This year the series is celebrating its tenth anniversary, and on this particular Saturday night you’re in for a special treat. The Portland Symphony Orchestra will be playing to a crowd of thousands (past performers include the Indigo Girls, James Taylor, and Paula Cole). Beginning at 7:30 p.m., the PSO will kick off its Summer Serenades series in this shopping mecca, where the orchestra will perform selections from Rossini’s Overture to The Barber of Seville, Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, and Mendelssohn’s Symphony no. 4, “Italian.” The crowd is full of locals and tourists alike, and the whole family is welcome — you can even bring along your pooch. If you’re passionate about the PSO and can’t make it on July 19, the orchestra is playing at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay Harbor on July 25, the Salvation Army Pavilion in Old Orchard Beach on July 27, and at the Sebago Long Lake Music Festival in Harrison on July 29. For more information on the other performances at L.L. Bean, call 800-441-5713 or visit www.llbean.com/shop/retailStores/calendar.html
