Bates Dance Festival, Bates College, Lewiston

Maine’s venerable private colleges are revered for their rigorous academic study from September through May. But Bates, in Lewiston, has become known for another program in July — the Bates Dance Festival. For twenty-five years, this college has hosted an international community of choreographers, performers, educators, and students. Together they create and perform new work as well as bring in dance groups and acts from around the world. On July 18 you’ll be treated to one of the hottest new dance troupes in the United States, Keigwin + Company. The group will be performing two works: The Elements, which explores juxtapositions such as reality versus fantasy and classical versus pop, and Love Songs, which highlights love duets from cute to sexy to sad and features music by Aretha Franklin and Neil Diamond. The tickets are twenty dollars for adults and twelve dollars for students and seniors. The performance begins at 8 p.m. in the Schaeffer Theatre. 207-786-6381. http://abacus.bates.edu/dancefest/index.php
